Weapon traps not triggering
« on: December 27, 2006, 09:32:00 pm »

For my fort, I've been dealing with several seiges from various races. My entryway is covered with weapon traps nearly 10 deep and has been successful in keeping the stinking trolls from getting further in. Then the elves who foolishly decided to come out of the wilderness (the others had better discretion, much to my disappointment). And finally the humans!

Except, when I did lure in the ruler, he pretty much marched through the majority of my traps before triggering one that probably hasn't been used. His squad also had no troubles getting through the first few rows.

I would assume that if there were cleaning trap jobs, which is the only non-bug explanation that comes to my mind, they would show up in the Job menu, correct? It hasn't, if that's the case.

I would like to get them into working condition. I figure disassembly then building it anew would fix that, which is going to be a long and tedious job. :/

chances are they were triggered by one of them but didn't kill them, the weapon traps have a cool down time, and if there are too many bit of people or eq on top of them they do not function either.

I wonder if people can parry or dodge weapon traps. The ruler was, after all, an elite soldier with several attributes.

However, triggered traps turn dark red for a few seconds, which didn't happen in this case. I had also managed to clear off most of the older equipment before this, as well, before I had the stinking humans come in.

What other things might cause this?

I noticed something like this once too.  I attributed it (I had only 3 rows of traps) to there being blood gore all over the trapped square (and a body here and there).

Other possibilities include if the trap went of in line of sight of the creature--either granting them a "reflex save bonus" or a complete bypass.

Had these civs had diplomats inside before?  A diplomat will report the nature of all traps that you let them pass over.

Hmm...no, I don't belive so.  Haven't had a goblin siege in the most recent fort for some time--they are very rare, once every 2 or 3 years--and as of yet, none of them have made it to the traps, so the diplomats that comes by haven't had a problem.
(I've never seen a diplomat warn me about non-effective traps either, so I don't know what I'm looking for.)

I think what he's saying is that the diplomat will report back to his civilization about any traps he sees.  So sieging elves and humans can stroll past your traps if their diplomat's been through them.

Oh.  Well, that I can see.  But last I knew Goblins didn't have diplomats.  ;)

thieves are trap-immune, except for cages.  do they count as trap-scouts in the same way?  (my experience would actually say "no" but its just a thought"

I don't quite remember.  I think goblin thieves suffer the consequences of their actions.  All kobolds can detect and avoid traps.

Aye, every goblin thief that tries to get into my fortress falls to the first layer of traps.
