finding coal
« on: April 24, 2011, 01:49:45 pm »

Just started playing again after a year...

I got one fortress running, except for a vast lack of coal/charcoal.  Things have changed so you can't see "sedimentary" on the biome now, so is there any good way to find coal?  Any good associated minerals so I can say, "hey, theres X!  theres bound to be metal and coal!"

According to the wiki, look for layers of
Sandstone
Siltstone
Mudstone
Shale
Claystone
Rock salt
Limestone
Conglomerate
Dolomite
Chert
Chalk

These layers are sedimentary and can have coal.

Coal is really rare currently, so you'll still be unlikely to find it, even if always embarking with layers containing it. You'd be much better off just using wood or embarking with coal.

In my experience, it's usually a little over 100 z-levels down. Just keep digging, though, and you'll find it soon enough.

You could also embark on a map with a volcano, which would require you somehow putting the magma in a chamber for you to use or digging lots o' stairs to get to the top of it.

If you find native platinum in a sedimentary layer, there's possibly a large cluster of magnetite there. No such mineral for coal.
