Thats one tight fitting cave..

The cave looks SO much better now that I've cleaned out all those random little wall things. Is there a way to make caves form like this naturally?

Easy. Advanced worldgen Params

Page Down 8 times in advanced worldgen parameter list to find the relevant Param to set.

Magmawiki has a whole page just detailing all the possible params, this is the section on Cavern params:-

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Advanced_world_generation#Cavern_Layout_Parameters

To quote the wiki: "If you want the largest open spaces possible, then decrease the density and increase the openness. "

Advanced world gen > Cavern Openness 100/100, or something along those lines, I do it every world I make, I love open caverns. :)

I usually set cavern passage density to 0/0 as well. But yeah, if you do passage density to 0 and openness to 100, you'll get fairly large, open caverns with decent-sized areas.

I'll have to try that on my next world. I'm still in love with this world.. and probably will be until I murder that damned hoary marmot.

but he's no longer the Law-giver of the local goblins, so I have no idea how to find him. :<

MY favorite setting is:

Cavern Openness: 70-99 (never full, always very high)
Passage Density: 4-7 (always a little)
Cavern Water: 33-66 (always some, never too much)

This leads to VERY nice, open caverns with columnar formations throughout.  Also a good amount of water in the caverns, but never to a level that it totally floods.

I finally got around to trying this.. I also mad eonly 1 cavern layer.. and it rejected about 1000 worlds before telling me there was a low elevation error or something. o.o

I've noticed similar problems but haven't bothered to pin it down, I also favor large open caverns with at least some water in them. I'll have to have a go at changing my world-gen stuff one but at a time to see when I encounter problems. I usually set mineral scarcity to around 500, caverns to be more open and increase volcano numbers.

I use elevation maps that are imported through PerfectWorld, so I never noticed any connection between caverns and low elevation rejects.  That doesn't seem like something that should be connected at all, does it?

Then again, I use 3 layered caverns as a matter of course.  I just love the coloration of the 3rd layer.

I run with:

[CAVERN_LAYER_COUNT:3]
[CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MIN:20]
[CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MAX:60]
[CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MIN:0]
[CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MAX:10]
[CAVERN_LAYER_WATER_MIN:10]
[CAVERN_LAYER_WATER_MAX:90]

The goal being to have caverns that are fairly open (which means low density), without them completely filling up the entire layer (the "openness" of the layer).  I've been fairly happy with the results.

I just wish there was a way to flatten the caverns in world gen.  I despise cave systems that go over/under up/down for dozens of levels.  They're just not that useful in fortress mode when they are that insane.
