magma destroys floodgates?
« on: December 21, 2006, 08:32:00 pm »

Ok, I'm playing using the df_22_121_23b version, and I had a flood channel built to nuke the chasm. But sometime after the chasm was nuked (I'm sure it was more than a season later.), and the floodgates closed again, the gates were destroyed withing minutes of each other. I could see no monster or anything, just lava. And the time from the first to the last of the 3 gates* being destroyed, was only half the time it takes to even haul one new floodgate to that area (My miner got halfway there with a new gate, when the last gate fell.)(* I always use at least 3 with lava, just in case a fire creature destroys one.)

I wasnt sure what happened, so I killed that game, and reloaded a backed up save. But the exact same thing happened, at the same time. There was no creature doing anything to them, so it was just the lava.

I dont know if this is a bug, or intended behavior. But it sure rates a "WTF?" with me.

If stone gates will no longer hold back lava, that will seriously change how I go about nuking the chasm from now on! I'll either go back to maps with trees, so I can make steel gates, or spend an awful lot of time digging all the way to the top or bottom of the map before digging a tunnel for nuking the chasm.

Why would you nuke a renewable resource of bones and skulls?

It was probably one or more magma men. They can (and will) destroy structures. You can only see them if one of your dwarves sees them, so if you don't have any dwarves around those floodgates, it'll just look like they are falling down.

it is definitely a creature destroying the gates.  stone floodgates work just fine with magma. even though they are huge and super-heated they can still be stealthy and destroy the gates, and ambush dwarves too.

Do imps ever do that? I've done over a dozen forts now, and have yet to run into a magman. Lots of imps tho. Plus I was just starting my third spring. I have yet to get a fort past year 6, they normally get taken out by strange flooding, cept for 3 I blew myself while learning how to use floodgates.

I did have a dwarf get close to that spot, and even had a miner dig an inspection hole to the lava just in front of the gates, so if something showed up it would head into the other tunnel, but I saw nothing, and nothing attacked either dwarf.

Least this time I dug a channel to the chasm in the tunnel, just before the last gate fell, so I can bridge accross to the other side. Before that, I just let the lava use the normal tunnel. That miner and his cow got out one end, just as the lava started in at the other. THAT was TIMING!

And to answer someone else, getting enough bones has never been a problem before this map. (This time desert. No game, just big cats. But I have horses and cows breeding, and expect to get lots of goblin bones. Gonna try a "watergun" defense, just for shiz and giggles. No bodies of water outside to make a permanent flood, so just dig channels around the yard, and hose the buggers as they come in! Wonder what the snooty elves will think about me watering a desert?) And I dont like the chasm critters picking off people at random as they cross the bridges. Might only be an annoyance, but its one I can do without.

Magmen tho, thats something new for me. Dont know anything about them yet. But looks like I'm gonna be learning shortly.
