What are shallow and deep metals?
Ores of metals that are found, respectively, shallowly or deeply planted at your embark site.

This is more complicated than you know.

Limonite would be a shallow metal, but Hematite can be in the depths as well as on the surface.

The shallow minerals could also be gold, galena, copper, or simply just some clusters of gypsum or gems.

What you want to do is to just embark somewhere with both shallow and deep stuff, run the DFprospector (part of the DFhack) and check out what you've got. If you only got tetrahedrite and gold, then maybe embark somewhere else.

Hematite occurs within sedimentary and igneous extrusive layers, both of which appear only at the surface.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Really? I was pretty sure that I once found hematite quite deep downstairs. Not above the magma sea or anything, but also nowhere near the soil layers.
