Im a little ways into building my first tower and I was wondering what a good height for it would be. How high up will my marksdwarves be able to shoot from?

If that's the way, then they can't shoot  at x, right in front of the wall, but they can at -

F - - -
Wx - -
Wx x -

And so on... Crossbows have a maximum range of twenty tiles [Though I've seen this glitch MAJORLY, my legendary Dwarf turned into a sniper... not that I minded] but raising the height actually decreases this, in a sense. As they spend one 'point' traveling a Z level, so for every level higher you go, it also counts as one Z level further...

Yes i'm planning on carving fortifications. I expected as much thanks for confirming it though.
