How will the economy work?
« on: April 10, 2011, 11:48:51 am »

Basically, discuss your thoughts on how the economy will actually work in practice.

my best guess is that

Dwarfs work>produce product>sell product to fortress, giving + to dwarf account and - to fortress account> pay rent for rooms/buy food/etc, giving + to fortress account and - to dwarf.
fortress wealth is the standard wealth as it is now and is used for calculating things such as seiges

Fortress account is the actual fortress treasury current total, used for paying nobles and military unless those groups get rent immunity.

i also think a supply and demand part will play its role- things thatthere ae more of give less money to dwarf, vice versa.
also affects traders- if you buy lots of one thing, they are more likely to bring more of the same and vic versa.

so elves birng lots of tame animals and less rope reed, etc.

Economy is enabled in 40d; go check it out. There's a pretty good description of the economy here:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Dwarven_economy

It worked pretty well except for:

- coins caused fps problems, which meant that players never minted them and ran economies entirely on credit
- room rents were based on an absolute value of rooms rather than scaled to demand, which meant that if you created nice bedrooms for everybody, all your haulers would get evicted by the fortress guard when the economy set in and would start sleeping in barracks, on the floor like hobos, etc.
- "check container" and "haul owned item" joined "attend party", "on break", and "store item (narrow cave spider silk sock) in stockpile" on the list of things that 90% of your dwarves would be doing when you got sieged.
- it created a million ways of creating unhappy thoughts without causing enough happy thoughts to counterbalance them

Presumably, all these will be partially fixed by the end of the caravan arc.
