really bad(cool) start location

it seems to just go right smack dab in the middle - my guys were placed on a frozen river (it was a cool location!! - a split river dividing this 9 story chunk of rock) so i started digging into the rock and digging up some -then the ice melted and everybody drowned except two miners = and those animals sure know how to swim!!! damn it has been months and they are still treading water at the bottom of the river with my drownt dwarves

in a spot like that I would have mined out the river ice and built wall dams. they love hanging out by where the wagon starts to their own detriment.

that was the first time I had ever seen a wall of ice below me - next time I will move off of it as fast as possible - beacause I propably would have had enough time if I had hurried up and made a gathering place and some piles

I've noticed that once you build them bedrooms they hang out there instead of the starting location.

setting a meeting zone helps, and also works for the cattle

Yes, designate a meeting zone using i and dismantle the wagon. ASAP in such situations.

Heh, this location is way better than my first.  My dwarves arrived right next to a chasm opening right in the middle of a giant cave spider nest.  The poor fellas didn't even have a chance.
