Chests and cabinets
« on: April 06, 2011, 09:03:41 pm »

One bit of alleged wisdom I picked up back in the 2-D days, was that a bedroom should have a bed, a chest, and a cabinet.  It's obvious why the bed is necessary, but I'm not so sure about the other two, lately.

I've never noticed any in-game punishment for being slow to provide the other two pieces of furniture.  Sure, they affect room quality, but so do a lot of otherwise inert things.  Nobles can demand them, but also demand other things.

It may be that they are only relevant when the economy is active -- but I play low-population forts.  (Or try to at least, DF2010 being rather disobedient to the POPULATION_CAP setting)

I wonder if, in a starting fort, I should put off constructions of these things until after my mason has finished my outdoor-yet-safe meeting hall kiloconstruction...

On another note, one meme going around here is "ΘπÆ┼", the flag of "communist" dwarves.  Considering that furnished dining rooms are important to any dwarf's happiness, perhaps a more accurate flag would be "Θ╥╤┼".

They use the chests and cabinets to store their coins and clothes. It helps reduce clutter.

With economy turned off and no need to make coins, my dwarves don't store anything in chests, only cabinets. They do, indeed, reduce clutter around the fort when the dwarves store their owned items.

Since the mayor can change at any time, I find it works to provide each non noble dwarf with a cabinet and two chests. Also prevents the old mayor loosing things they had stored in office and dinning room (assuming you don't give each dwarf those...).

What do they need the cabinets for?

I know cabinets can store clothes, but I still don't see the need.  The active set is on the dwarf.  If they claim new clothes, why do they want to keep the old set?

Also, in 40d cabinets didn't seem to do anything about the clothes wrestlers leave on the floor of their barracks.

No idea, but they do. Lots of my dwarves have a cabinet full of extra clothes in their bedrooms. If they don't have a cabinet they just leave the clothes all around the fort.

My military dwarves don't store their items in cabinets- likely because they're always on duty.

There is no harm in delaying making chests and cabinets other than annoying stuff liteling the fort. From what I've seen in 31.18 they were storing clothes in cabinets, and food in chests (it got spoiled later, filling the bedroom with miasma) (they only did it, because I had too few backpacks). I'm actually thinking, it might be worth it to have 2 cabinets per room.

Is it my imagination, or do children not use cabinets to store clothes even if they have a room assigned to them?  After endless goblin ambushes, the place is littered with clothing claimed by dwarf children.  When the adults decide they own something, they put it in a cabinet. The children don't seem to.

Well, they're children. What did you expect? :P

For military dwarves, I like to have at least 3 cabinets assigned in their room.  Each cabinet only holds 5 pieces of clothing, so they fill up fast as soon as they put on their regular uniform.  Regular dwarves can get by with 1-2.

Since I'm going to have a specific set of military rooms this time, I'll probably go with 2x3 or 2x4 or 3x3 to allow more room for cabinets for my military dwarves.

They store clothes in cabinets, and everything else in chests. Since dwarves don't claim anything else with no economy the chest is useless and just a fluff decoration currently.  Chests will be used for storage in a hospital and I'm assuming military though my knowledge of military equipment storage is a little lacking, it's not something I tend to deal with. Cabinets can be very useful and necessary in a well developed fort but chests not so much.

Also a side question, does anybody know if and how armor and weapon racks store armor/weapons? Because I appear to be able to assign them to squad and individual equip, though I'm not sure if it does anything, possibly referring to another use for chests and cabinets also in the barracks.

This is a platinum warhammer. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. it menaces with spikes of platinum.
there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

Weapon racks and armor stands are also fluff in the current version.

Hopefully, they will eventually be storage for weapons and armor, like cabinets are used for clothing...

I don't know about chests, my dwarves never store anything in them, however they do use cabinets and I can imagine them being valuable when your dwarves start owning lots of clothes. Sadly they still seem to leave them cluttered around at times.
