If he doesn't release often we can't find things he missed.

Should he release when there are bugs he DOES know about?  Because that's what's slowing things down.

This is alpha, it needs updates nonstop.

No, he doesn't. This is the illusion of faster progress. He can either update in large batches less frequently with more time for stability and working things out, or he can update nonstop. If he slows down and gets to a regular schedule he can do better work without costing himself so much personal energy. You end up in the same place except one option wears out your programmer and turns out buggy code; the other doesn't.

You can get it done quick or you can get it done right.
