Multi-tile ponds whose fillable tiles are not connected

If a pond is designated over multiple tiles which would all be valid ponds by themselves, but which are not connected to each other, then only one of the pond tiles will actually be filled.

Here's what I mean:

(top view, where + is floor, O is wall, and . is open space)

OOOOOOOOO

The pond designation covers all of the middle row.
The dwarves fill the leftmost . up to 7/7, but do not fill the others.

If I designate one pond per each ., instead of one pond covering all of them, the dwarves fill them all.
