What to do with lots of silk cloth?
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:08:54 am »

When I discovered a cavern, I made a loom.
Now I have a stockpile full of silk cloth.
What should I do with all this stuff?

Make robes, they sell for the most.

Also, make bags. Your dwarfs will find plenty of things to put in them.

Make hoods, dresses, and robes for your military.  They offer coverage that armor doesn't.
Make bags, I always need more bags.
Grow some dimple cups and/or blade weed.  Mill to make dye, dye the cloth.
Sew images on everything in your fort.
Make moar bags!
Make more ropes, and place a well in every room in your fort.
Buy everything from the elves using metal bins full of silk cloth.

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.

No, make bags with the cheap stuff. Silk for textiles export and gear for your dwarves. Make sure you dye it for extra value.

Valuewise, cloth goes GCS > pig tail = rope reed > silk = yarn (all types).  At least, according to the cost at embark, pig tail is 2x as valuable as anything except GCS silk.  Also, dyed bags can be placed in rooms just like coffers and chests (b->h), and can have ridiculously high value if you have skilled dyers/weavers/clothiers.

EDIT: forgot rope reed is the same value as pig tail

I don't think you can decorate cloth crafts, but it works on clothing (not armor) and bags I think. I always got a strong cloth industry to make use of the mountains of goblinite.

Also, I'm not sure how the clothing bug is working now. Does making new clothes make dwarves claim them and just never wear them?

You can decorate soft objects with cloth or leather by sewing an image onto them. Soft objects are cloth crafts, cloth ropes, cloth/leather bags, cloth/leather clothing, quivers, and leather armor.

You can never have too many bags on your farm for milling and processing plants. Bags are necessary for quarry bushes, one of the most profitable industries in the game. A bag full of uncooked quarry bush leaves is fairly valuable; cook them into a lavish roast and the price goes through the roof!

When dwarves claim a clothing item, it gives them a good thought, also
