Mining and Wood Cutting mutually exclusive
« on: November 21, 2007, 02:18:00 am »

I've dug out as much of my fortress as I really need right now, so I tried to set my miners to cutting down trees (my metalsmiths need charcoal). It turns out that setting the Wood Cutting task on my miners turns the Mining task off, and vice versa.

this isn't a bug, it has always been this way.

Woodcutting and mining both require different tools - an axe or a pick. The character can only carry one of the two, and thus the tasks are mutually exclusive.

This is not a bug, this is a feature  :)
It is quite difficult to wield an axe and a mining pick at the same time

Both of them are 1-handed weapons though, aren't they? I'm not expecting a dwarf to be cutting down trees while simultaniously mining out a cavern (petrified wood excluded); they could easily strap their unused tool back into their dwarven utility belt.

After all, it isn't like miners aren't able to mine while hauling around their artifact floodgate.

Have to agree there is no reason a dwarf who can carry a bin full of blocks can't have an axe (or a crossbow) strapped to his back while mining away.

You can happily carry it in your backpack in adventure mode and weight is already in there.

Also it would let me try my commune fortress again  :)

I'd like to see a miner double-wielding picks...  :p

I'd like to see Pick available as a weapon!  They're listed under weapons in the stocks, they're crafted under the weapons category in a forge, the wiki lists a damage rating for them.  But no, all miners default to wrestlers unless you go through the work of swapping their weapon and task when activating/deactivating them.

Miners do use their picks as weapons. Wrestlers not only cover those who are fighting empty handed but also miners with their pick and those who are carrying an artifact which they bludgeon people with.

I agree it would be nice if pick wielders could be given a seperate title rather than wrestler.

Every dwarf who fights in close combat is bound to get a taste of wrestling at one time or another.

Miners use the mining skill when fighting with their picks.  Picks do piercing damage so they are usually quite deadly in the hands of an experienced miner.

I like the behaviour that miners focus on the mining they are doing, woodcutters focus on just chopping wood.  It's probably a workaround for something related to those kind of tasks.  Of course, you can have engraving activated with either of those, also.  I don't see any gameplay reason not to allow turning on both, even though I would choose to keep them mutually exclusive in my games
