Interpreting Fortifications- improving how they work
« on: April 02, 2011, 08:33:59 am »

I always wondered exactly what a fortification is, when I saw the interpretation in stonesense as a castle's battlements I thought that's reasonable ; however, it raises the question as to how in the world a particularly skilled goblin would do anything to dwarves not firing from them? My assumption of what happens physically is that crossbow dwarves reload their crossbow, peek out , take a shot and then hide back behind the fortification to reload. That means that a goblin should only have a chance to nail them while the dwarf is shooting or shortly after. Similarly an option for "hold fire" should be made for crossbowdwarves and until they open fire the enemy cannot fire at them unless they're right up against the fortification themselves. This means that you can let your dwarves safely wait until a particular good crossbowgoblin gets closer to nail him.

Interesting idea, but remember that bows are often used as indirect-fire weapons so there should still be a chance of dwarves being hit the rest of the time, at least whilst using fortifications in the open air. This might necessitate separate commands for "build crenellations" and "carve arrow slits".

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Except if there is a ceiling above the dwarves, too, and they are firing out of "arrow slits" in the side of a castle.  (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrowslit )

You can make an arrowslit with a roof over it, and only a couple inches of space between it.

In its most basic form, fortifications are not "cover" - there is just a skill check you have to pass in order to shoot through the fortification, and a non-novice archer will be able to pass that check fairly routinely, and shoot an arrow through 3 fortifications at an angle to hit a passing bumblebee at a range of 150 feet.

In order for the sort of thing you are talking about to matter, you would need some sort of recognition of "cover", and a clear indication of the relative sizes of objects in different tiles, and how they can be used for cover.

I think they have more relation to murder holes then anything else.
