Offer to Sprite/Art for peoples.
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:39:29 pm »

Hey forum!
I'm an art student (At the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) and so like to art and sprite. This here forum's a breeding ground for intriguing game ideas and so fourth. So, I'm here to offer services as an art guy to whomever might be interested! Say you got a project, maybe a rogue-like, I can do some spriting or other art for it. Here's some samples of stuff I've done:

A couple image galleries of things I've made:
https://picasaweb.google.com/BobusDoleus/Gallery#
https://picasaweb.google.com/BobusDoleus/CharacterSelect?authkey=Gv1sRgCJr1p6_L4KLUyAE#

So yeah, willing to help someone out by graphic-ing for them! It'll be fun.

If you don't mind my asking, what's that game in the first screenshot? It looks like Decker, except totally badass. Do want.

Pretty cool gallery too, no doubt one of the aspiring game designers on here will try and enlist you.

Yeah, I /wish/ that game existed. Is a mock-up of a game that.... I wish... existed. I've been vaguely working on making it, got as far as this cute little demo http://www.sipan.org/~konstantin/bin.zip (Extract everything to the same folder, click index, then click the app window for to lock controls.) It's slightly more worked then it looks - the level's randomly generated and I'm just a few hundred lines of code away from having there be randomly generated weapons that like, attack with various effects and be built out of components that you could later take apart and cobble together and stuff.

Well I am some what impressed! Have you got any tips for an amateur? I'm a programmer myself and have design documents for many games, but graphics have always been some what of a bottle neck for me. Although I do my best! So if you don't mind sharing some trade secrets.
What program do you use?
What file format do you work in?
Any good tutorials on-line?
Any good tips?

This is a sample of what I have been able to produce, on a good day,

Very Paul Robertson inspired. Although I take my libertys.  :) Of course I'm sure you don't want this thread to turn into a 'how to', so feel free to not answer. Professional knowledge is a valuable thing, and not something you should always just give away.

Well to be honest, I /wish/ professional knowledge were something I could just 'give away' in a single forum post, heh :) It'd imply that all skills are really easy to learn :) But as to some useful pointers, I use photoshop, the file format doesn't really matter (It's PSDs when I'm working to preserve information such as layers, then a PNG afterwards because it's a practical format), PixelJoint (the forum and gallery community) is a great resource for pixel art - they have a great critiquing forum that'll critique your work - and the standard boring tips like 'Draw from life,' 'practice forever,' stuff like that. Is trite but true.

Ooh, photoshop?
I always used Graphics Gale, but I will give photoshop a shop! Thanks for the forum points though. I feel like drawing something now.  :)

GraphicsGale is a fine tool, photoshop is just something I already have because it's very useful for artists in general and people who like to work with wacom tablets specifically, and it is more powerful (though in ways not too important for pixel art specifically) and, in my mind, easier to use after you get used to it. Heck, you could in theory do everything in Paint, but I think that's a terrible idea because layers and transparency save a lot of time without undermining quality in any way and anything that saves time, leaving you to enjoy drawing instead of doing boring stuff, means you'll be more productive and learn more, faster :)

Someone requested a 16x16 dwarf. Here's a try at one.

Blown up:

So I guess I'll also take single requests as well! Why not.

EDIT: Now my avatar. Avataricious avariciousness.

You should keep working on it, I really like the look of it!  It reminds me of hacking in shadowrun.  :)

And now a folder icon set for DF. Is .ico file. Have it! Is nothing fancy, just the prior dwarf image all icon-ified and stuck inside the windows-folder-graphic.

And thanks! Shadowrun was certainly an inspiration. In an ideal world, the final game would be a blend of a roguelike, Decker, Endgame:Singularity, and Uplink. I'll see if I can't get past my latest roadblock and work on this some more.

I would love to enlist you. Heck, I'd even like to pay you. Unfortunately it'll have to wait until Cult is a bit further along. Any chance you could PM me a contact e-mail and I'll toss you an e-mail when things have progressed a bit?

Awesome work.
