I just remembered something else - Dungeon Keeper 2 (and possibly DK1, but I don't exactly remember how things work there). You can torture enemies till they join you, so you can have anyone on your side. And you can take direct control of any unit under your command. Hence you can play as pretty much any character.

(as I first tried Jagged Alliance less than a year ago and it was already better than a lot of modern games). I had no idea so many games existed like this :')

You can make it even better with the unofficial 1.13 patch/mod, which is being constantly developed, although as of late something might have changed.
