[38c] Extract Metal Strands ignored
« on: February 24, 2008, 04:41:00 pm »

Savegame uploaded: http://rapidshare.com/files/96645807/save_with_extract_strands_bug.zip.html

176.38a is the first version where I found raw adamantine; I added the "extract metal strands" task in all my craftdwarf workshops, and gave the "extract strands" job to at least five dwarves. I have a lot of raw adamantine sitting in my custom stockpile. However, all 5 dwarves show up with no job (and this has lasted two seasons) while "extract metal strands" is at the top of the workshop task list.
The bug persists in 38c.

I have searched on the wiki and the forums, but I don't think I missed a step. This is basically a bug that makes adamantine useless.

Edit: I also tried enabling and disabling Raw Adamantine in the economic stones dialog, to no avail. I tried as well adding the job at the manager screen. And I believe I understand well the process through which adamantine goes:
1 - "Extract metal strands" at the Craftdwarf's workshop; uses raw adamantine
2 - Either turn the extracted strands into wafers at a smelter, or into cloth at some other workshop.
3 - Do something with the adamantine wafers at a forge, or make adamantine socks or something like that with the cloth.
Presently I can't get past step 1, the job is just ignored and blocks my job queue. I'll upload a savegame if I'm told where to upload it.

Edit 2 & 3: title updated and savegame uploaded

You can either smelt or make it into strands. Making strands is only for clothing, and adamantine clothing rots like any other clothes. So extracting metal strands is useless any way you put it, bugged or not.

Don't you have to extrand the strands before you can make adamantine into wafers?

Exactly, and that's the job they don't pick up. They don't cancel it, either, just stand idle. Does it work fine for someone else?

I just loaded a save of a world generated in 173.38a into 176.38b, to find out whether it happens in my current fortress.

It looks like the dwarves are actually extracting strands successfully; I haven't seen a problem yet. Unfortunately I haven't generated a new world in which to seek adamantine in 176.38b yet, so I can't say if that'd cause a problem or not. I'll post again if I get to test it in a world generated in 176.38b.

iirc Adamantine has a seperate job for extracting it's strands. Try looking at the bottom of the job list.

Yeah, that's correct, but the OP already claimed to have done that, if I understood correctly.

Do you have a stockpile the raw adamantine is trying to get into? If so, the hauling job has a deathlock on the stone until the job is done or cancelled.

The only other thing I can think of is turning some of the strands into wafers, but I doubt that would help.

Go into the options screen and try turning on "Show all Job Cancellations" or whatever. Then see if you get any job cancellations.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

I have plenty of raw adamantine sitting both in my (now full) stockpile, and on the floor where it was dug out. Still, nobody will pick up the job to extract the strands.

I uploaded a savegame for Toady and anyone else who wants to help solve the mystery to check out: http://rapidshare.com/files/96645807/save_with_extract_strands_bug.zip.html

Isn't that a bug or, at least, an unimplemented feature?  Adamantine clothing is still, well, adamantine.  It shouldn't 'rot' for anything short of dragon-breath, if that.

Shouldn't but it does.
