Seeds and Farming Weirdness

I'm not entirely sure what caused it, season change, or my designating a change in planting.  Both?

I set sweet pods to be grown in the summer and along came fall and I changed fall's designation from cave wheat to plump helmets.  My farmers came along with sweetpod seeds, planted them, left, the = went back to ~ (normal farm) and the seed was gone.  They then repeated the process until I was out of sweet pod seeds.

All of this was done inside durring sunny weather.

I'd like to add that the following year only a portion of this farm ever got planted--about 8 tiles.  I have plenty of plump helmet spawn, but there are no jobs trying to plant the empty tiles.
