Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm mostly replying to Gorjo's post. A large number of the American revolutionaries were men who had become very wealthy through smuggling restricted French made goods from the French West Indies. This was highly illegal as the British did not want their money supply going to the French, but the French offered better deals. It's tough to stop a ship with another ship on the ocean though...

EDIT: The way it was corporate was that the crown controlled the EXTREMELY lucrative colonies through what amounts to economic means, by controlling it's markets. The problem with that is that all the money went to Britain and Americans were driven to a barter system in the local area comparable to the Indian trade of 4 beaver pelts for 1 metal ax. Meanwhile, British merchants took British coin back to Britain, and since there were limited physical coins in circulation, for a time the country swapped. (Exports < imports)
