Reproducible Crash (Well construction)
« on: October 30, 2007, 06:57:00 pm »

I've just had a crash at the same point thrice in a row - right after building a well.  I've prepared a save where the well is due to be completed in ten seconds, so you can check it out Toad.

Error window every time:

quote:
The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at location 0x008411db.
(sic.)

PM me or reply here or on IRC to give me permission to send you the file.  It's 8MB so I don't want to send it if you're not expecting it.

EDIT - It also crashes with the exact same error if I build the well in another location.

Yeah, a save would be handy.  Please send.  Setting up a well takes a few minutes.

Same here.  Build a well, crashes within 10 minutes (often less).

Infinity, do you mean it crashes within ten minutes of you designating the site and materials?  That would probably be the same crash as I'm having, as it would take a while for the architect to set up the materials and get a mason in.  The crashes I'm aware of are all happening within a few seconds of the well's actual completion.

I suspect it may be to do with us placing the well in the wrong place, something Toady might not do himself in testing because he wouldn't need to experiment with placement, he'd know where and how to build.  So far I've tried building in the only two places it would let me, i.e the edges of a pond and on slopes.  I expect it's a lot more complicated than before.  The wiki holds no answers as of yet though.  Back to the drawing board.

I successfully built a well, and it didn't crash for ~5 - ~10 min. However the instant someone tried to use it, it did crash.

FWIW my well went down more then 1 z-level before it got to water. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

The crash that occurs shortly immediately after building a well has been fixed.  It might be related to the longer term one, or it might be the same as that one.  I'll poke around a bit, and we'll see with the next release.

edit: it should all be the same one.  In the save I received, there were thirsty dwarves, and they drank from the well right after it was built.  The bucket has stagnant water [9] in it, so it was used once.

Nice work Toady.

One further thing to note... if an architect/mason is thirsty when you get him to build a well over a channel with water below he brings one item to the site and then gets stuck there wanting to drink instead of going for the rest of the materials.
