Failing to Dump
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:30:14 am »

For some reason, I have some stones on the stairway to the bedrooms marked for dumping, but the dwarves completely ignore them.  Anyone have any clues why that might be?

Things I've thought of:

No path to items.  Invalid because there are dwarves sleeping within sight of the stones.
Forbidden items.  Invalid because, well, they're not forbidden, I checked.
They're outside.  Invalid because they're underground, dark.

I'm sure it's something stupid, but I can't figure it out.

I've noticed this problem too, but usually it's with socks or some similar random crap dropped by dwarves and not stones. I've never figured out what was going on.

Things that are owned by someone never get cleaned except by that person.  That's probably your issue.  These stones are not owned

i couldn't figure out why it wasn't working, but after disabling my old dumps, making a new one, forbidding and unforbidding the items, eventually they were moved.. so i duno, maybe eve5ryone is busy?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Are the dwarves busy trying to dump inaccessible items instead of the accessible ones?

Are the dwarves busy trying to dump inaccessible items instead of the accessible ones?
Or a variant thereof, are they trying to use an inaccessible dump site and abandoning the job because, well, the dump site they've chosen is inaccessible?

Check the 'o'ption screen, see if Dwarves ignore stones is on
Check your burrows if you have any set up
Check if you didn't assign them for building somewhere that's suspended or unreachable

In the worst case you can mark them hidden and try to forget they are there..

You'll actually want to check "Dwarves ignore/gather refuse."

All of these are great suggestions...and none of them (except perhaps "bug") are the solution.  The dumps are accessible (they're dumping other stone), the stones are accessible, the stones are not forbidden, and I have plenty of idle dwarves (well, there were times I had like 20 free, and these stones weren't moving).

I'll try redesignating the dump zones.

Then the stones are most likely tasked for building projects.

That is almost definitely it, thank you.  My masons are sloooooow.  Or my construction projects are too big.  Nah, must be slow masons.

Thanks for the explanation, and I should have thought of that.

I have this same problem, only that the items are outside. Does that change it? Is that a common bug?

I can update a picture if needed.

In the orders menu there's an option for dumping things that are outside.
