My computer just died
« on: March 22, 2011, 04:47:52 pm »

When I pressed the power button today, I heard two very loud pops coming from the computer.  This was followed by a burning smell.  I immediately unplugged everything and opened the case, but I could not locate where the smell was coming from before it went away.

I don't see any obvious damage inside, but I am hardly an expert.  Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

Oh no, you let the magic smoke out!

Well, something clearly fried. My guess is the power supply; I've had a similar problem, and it happens quite often ('specially if it's an OEM).

Only fix is to replace the component, I think.

Power supply fried.

Get a stronger model, with extra juice compared to your PC's need. I did that every time my supply fried and had no problems with the replacement.
It also makes overclocking a bit safer.

If it's frying that often then perhaps you should consider getting a surge protector and/or a better brand.

Yeah, that helps. PSUs often output a lower wattage than they are rated for, and decrease over time. It also helps when you want to upgrade a component.

What they said.  Power supplies are fairly cheap for a computer component, so try a higher wattage power supply first.  If that doesn't work, then the motherboard might be dead.

Put it on a boat, burn the boat, then send it off to live the rest of its life in Valhalla. Atleast thats what I do with my dead computers.

It was the power supply.  I'm getting a new one tomorrow.  Cheers.
