That would work, yes.  Try it!

Also, I haven't tried, but it worked in .19 at least.  I have no reason to assume it was changed.  You can do this manually, by attaching a support to the underside of the sky (I know, right?) and then a floor tile under that support, another support under this floor, and then the ceiling of your structure.

This is because a single support from the sky will only support things directly beneath it, but a support hanging from a floor is secured like any other support.

I just tested this in the arena and I am pretty sure it does not work.

So, unless the support building somehow "transfers" support in a way a solid obsidian wall won't...

And for some reason I also thought to test

Code: [Select]

and that didn't work either.

Sounds like a good idea, OP! But don't just stop there. Instead, build your shelf only five layers above the main surface of your map, and construct a massive castle on top of it. Also: create a "purification chamber" to punish violent dwarves... that is, a sun-filled chamber that has grates over the floor, under which are cave floaters that can be punctured by spear-traps. Maybe also some water and fire too, but your dwarves *do* need to live, right?

This is a great idea and I want to do something like this now.

I imagine that's the point of the support-floor-support, to work around that. But if it that won't work I'll just need to support it from under (which won't be as awesome) or even turn cave-ins off.

I'll report on that once I get that far.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.

I just tried this, and the lower support won't hold anything that isn't directly under it.  Lost a Legendary mason and my Chief Medical Dwarf to !!SCIENCE!!.

Also, you can build floors and bridges right to the edge of the map, but not constructions that block tiles (walls, workshops).  Exploiting raising drawbridges to block the edge of the map can help you control where caravans and invaders appear.

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.

Huh. I'm actually doing something similar at my current fortress. Mine won't be going all the way up though.

I'm just connecting the whole shebang to one support, then connecting that to a lever.

If I see a siege I can't handle, they get to have some Fun.

3. If it for some reason *collapses* after the sky shielding floor is built, what would happen?
3. You get a map-wide cave in, which will utterly destroy anything on the surface freeze your computer for seven hours and replace it with a thick layer of dust and "whacky stone". soot

Fix'd.

In all seriousness, though, go for it.

Zack, my boy, practicality - or the lack of it - has never stopped a Dwarf Fortress player before. You want to find a way to play this game without your eyes? Someone here with the know-how will be able to help you and we'll be damned if we let a little thing like the practicality of a solution get in our way.
