Everything I've read lately says a Candy cap would be far better than candy greaves or boots, for when the dwarf gets knocked out.

Everything I've read lately says a Candy cap would be far better than candy greaves or boots, for when the dwarf gets knocked out.
I believe candy robe would be better, it protects almost everything. Including the head and throat.

They wear out though as they are clothes, so not a good long term investment.

You can wear mutiple layers on every part of the body.  There's a limit, and people often try to figure out the optimal clothing/armor set to maximize coverage within the body part limits.
