Hell Pepper
« on: March 23, 2011, 01:57:04 pm »

So I'm trying to make a plant.. a pepper.  A really, really HOT pepper.  I already got a little bit of something out of the random plant generator program (*love* it), but I need a bit of help spicing it up, so to speak.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I know I need to add some temperature info.  I want this stuff to be flamable.  I'm cool with it growing too near to lava pools and exploding. Actually if it released seeds in that manner, that would be ideal... but they probably wouldn't sprout where they fall, would they? But what kind of temperatures sholuld I make that at to give a nice satisfying boom not an extended burn.

First of all, syndromes cannot be contracted via ingestion - right now, the only possible methods are injection into the bloodstream, inhalation, or skin contact (in the form of contaminants, so it has to be either a powder or a liquid).

Seeds do not work that way in Dwarf Fortress. Also, the only thing in DF that's "explosive" is a cave-in - when things catch fire, they just burn away slowly and leave nothing behind.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

technically, I don't think any plants actually "drop seeds" to reproduce. Isn't it all by spore or something right now?

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

Wild plants are composed entirely of mud, which is why they grow on mud and muddy farms.  Domestic plants have been trained to seed.

Also, a contact syndrome could be fun to cause injury during picking.

If you'll note, I've already made a milling product out of this plant.  I suppose one could flood a stockpile full of this stuff with water, making all the "pepper" come out of the barrels, and coating the walls and floors with !HOT! pepper.

You can also make a stockpile of bags, forbid the powder inside the bag, and then dump the bag itself.  This causes the dwarves to upturn the bag, leaving the contents on the ground, and place the bag in the dump zone.  This can be used for various purposes, really.  Emptying a bag of sand so you can store seeds, dying your road by hand, etc...

If only stuff fell through grates, I could make a stockpile of this stuff over top of my entrance hallway, then "dump" the bags, having the pepper fall as mist through the grates onto the seiging gobbo's... Dwarven pepper spray.  Accept no substitutes.

Are you sure it won't?  What if the grate retracts via lever?

Brilliant, and I may have to try it... didn't consider linking them to a lever, but it all seems so simple now.

For that matter, a hatch might work.  It depends on if the contaminant sticks to the hatch, or falls through.  Either way, a retracting bridge should drop a contaminant regardless, so a 2x1 retracting bridge (it has to be anchored, after all) with the powder dumped on the overhanging tile.  Do inform us of the results of this!
