Squeezing as Much Stuff into Embark as Possible
« on: March 23, 2011, 07:09:34 pm »

Got any tips for it?
Here's mine: Instead of bringing 30 of one meat, bring one of 30 meats each. Each type will net you a free barrel you can use to make booze later. Also, bringing wooden axes or no axes at all will save you some points. If you choose not to bring any axes, deconstruct the wagon on embark and then use the logs to make wooden axes. MUCH less expensive than copper ones. You can do that with picks, too, but it takes a bit more work.

I don't worry too much about it because you can always just increase your embark points at world generation time. Call it cheating if you want, but you could say the same for chopping trees down with wooden axes.

Embark with the ingredients for bismuth bronze.  It costs less points to make more bismuth bronze, which is identical to bronze except for value.  Many of my forts have had bismuth bronze training armor, and steel for active soldiers.

Overall though, I end up with hundreds of stone, because I don't need anything.  I can bring a pick, axe, and anvil only, scavenge local plants, and within a year have a thriving fort with wall and cage trap hallway.  Depending on how quickly I move, I can even get a squad of 10 bismuth bronze axe soldiers training in their barracks and ready to push back ambushes.

That isn't as reliable in .19+, as bismuth bronze requires three different metals, none of which are guaranteed.

Bring one of each milk and egg, as those also net a barrel each.  Bring some bags of sand, regardless of wether you have sand or not, you can dump them and reclaim the bags and have bags to hold seeds and milled products in for 1p each.  Don't bother with axes, wooden training axes chop down trees just fine.  If you don't plan on getting into metalworking in the first year, don't worry about an anvil, even at 100p they are a bit spendy, buying some dogs and beer with those points can be a little more useful in the early stages.

<3 doggies.

They are the most versatile animal to raise.  Sure you cannot milk them or make yarn from their hair, but you can stuff them all in cages and they wont die from starvation, you can train them to be war dogs and pasture them in the entrance of your fort to reveal sneakers, and if things get bad, you can butcher them and have some food.

Coincidentally, have you ever gotten hunting dogs to work?  I tried some distant time ago, and the dogs seemed to ignore the hunt and just stay around the hunter like a regular pet.
