Unfortunate Flood Survivor
« on: October 12, 2006, 02:19:00 am »

A few days ago my fortress was running as intended when I got the message that the underwater cave was flooding. Checking my bridge, which is 7 spaces wide to prevent people from falling off and drowning, I notice that one of my weavers is there. In fact, it's my best weaver that's there getting a drink, and she has her newborn child in her arms, who I'm hoping will grow up to be a master weaver like her mother. I sit there and think "Aw, she's gonna move before the river the river floods", but she doesn't. The river floods and she winds up getting swept into the middle of it with her child. She starts floundering around while I keep hoping she gets out of the water already, but she gets only a single movement away from the bridge before she succumbs to drowning. However, apparently she made a last desperate act to save her child and threw her up onto the bridge or something in the exact same instant that she drowned. So yeah, I had an orphan run around the fortress for a while until she grew into a child, but I'm wondering if this was a bug and the child should have also drowned along with her mother?

I'm uncertain, but I think that "riders" like the baby (or goblins riding beak dogs, etc) will not feel the effects of terrain until they are thrown from their mounts.  So the baby was being held above the waves, and when the mother died, he or she landed in the water and then paddled to the bridge.
