The key is making sure they don't ever develop friendships. One way is to bring an ax, turn on pause on embark, find the dwarf with the least friends/aquantances and assign him woodcutting, along with some trees to be cut very far away from everyone right away, designate one dwarf to mine out a 1x1 burrow and one to build a door while the dwarf is cutting wood (bring a spare pick for your hermit maybe?) lock all dwarves inside the room, then take the dwarf off of ax cutting. It should allow you to starve the dwarves to death without any repercussions. Make sure you make stone coffers to avoid those nasty FPS killing ghosts.

Alternatively, mod your game to start with only one Dwarf. I know its possible to do (some guy modded it to start with like 1000 dwarves or something like that because he felt the need to cause unneeded abuse to his processor and ram) but I am personally unsure as to how to do it, maybe post in the modder forum.

Does falling a Pit o'Doom counts towards complacency by, for example, dropping naked nobles down a 50-Z shaft?

I mean, without the dwarves acctually seeing it?

Pretty sure the dwarves have to see it.

I Runesmith'd the other 6 out of existence.  I figure this is as close as I'll get to "embark solo".
