Empty Caravan (elves)
« on: October 11, 2006, 11:30:00 pm »

Ok, so these elves show up and don't have anything to trade.  Nothing.  Nadda.
"Fale Awiriesala, elf Merchant: Greetings from the woodlands.  We are enchante(rs...) your more ethical works.  We've come to trade."

So...not being able to TRADE anything I ended up giving them my trade item to see what happened.  Ah, nothing.
What's up with that?

Once my dwarfs, who were starving, ran and took the food from a dwarf caravan (before it arrived to the depot that is). When it got to the depot there was nothing in it to trade, not even cloth/leather. This may have happened to you. Also, that is a bug I just pointed out, since my dwarfs could steal the food without getting beaten the hell up by the caravan guards.

Maybe?  I am low on food--not OUT, but severly low (and with newly planted crops just begining to be harvested).
I wasn't watching the caravan, so I don't know.

Do elves even trade food? I was under the impression they only traded Rope Reed Cloth...mainly because that's the only thing they bring.

An interesting bug I found: If you dismantle a trade depot after a caravan has dropped its items down, all of those items are no longer considered to be owned by the caravan, allowing for you to steal them all away.

How did you manage that?  I thought dismantling it was disabled while they were there.

Sure, you can dismantle the depot.  That's equivalent to the "seize" command.  You'll face the same repercussions, because caravans only know how to calculate the value of the goods they leave with compared to what they entered with.

The caravan theft is known, and the caravan guards (especially dwarven ones) shouldn't waste you on the spot...  but they might ask for stuff when they arrive.  In any case, the prior paragraph applies.  It's as if you "seized" the goods.  Now, a problem with this is that you can't really make amends when they arrive if they have nothing to trade, since items that are "offered" aren't the property of the caravan, but the ruler of their civilization.  If the caravan has no items left, you can't give them anything to make up for your starving dwarves.

Hmm.  Maybe caravans should first claim offered goods for themselves as long as you have any outstanding debts, and only use the remainder for civilization leaders?  'Offer' could be replaced with 'appease' or something as long as this is the case, to let the player know what's going on.

After all, if you've just mobbed a merchant's carts and grabbed all their wares, they're probably not going to be in a mood to carry messages for you.

Sounds reasonable...  their cheery introductions should probably take a different tone as well.
