First, does the armor fit you? Human-sized armor is larger than armor for elves/dwarves/goblins. If you are a human, the smaller armor will be marked as "small breastplate" or "small high boots". If you are an elf/dwarf/goblin, it is marked "large".

Second, what are you wearing on that part of your body? For example if you're trying to put on a breastplate, press "r"emove to find out what you're wearing on your Upper Body. Remove a few tunics or cloaks if needed.

Be sure to read the Layering rules at http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Armor. You can wear a breastplate and up to three chainmail shirts underneath, but you'll have to take off some clothing so everything fits.

So in short - "r"emove anything you're already wearing in that slot then "w"ear the armor you want to put on (which has to be in your backpack or in your hand). Once you're wearing the armor you want to wear, you can try putting back on the clothing you took off, and dropping the rest.
