Or you could make a better trollmine. Replace the support and floors with a hatch and pressurized magma.

Preferably wood.  I've had stone hatches take months to smash...

Upright spikes will not support a construction atop them, if that's what you mean.

Trollmines linked to pressure plates, will trigger when any creature passes close by.  So, you might waste a perfectly good trollmine on a common goblin, or waterbuffalo...

If I change the activation weight to the weight of a troll, will gobbos still activate it?

No, because goblins weigh less, but it seems to be based on size rather than weight.  I have trouble getting the weight to the right limit.

The point is that the plates control the hatch, and when the trolls come over to smash them and one of the plates is triggered and the hatch opens, the ground erupts in a plume of fire.

Well if you've got plates then yeah, otherwise a wood hatch should keep lava back, right?  It only catches flame if lava occupies the same square.  A cheap, unlinked wooden hatch can get smashed, lava pours, run out of lava, and you replace the hatch.  Cheaper than magma-safe hatch and mechanisms...

Yeah, but then you have to reload. With mechanisms, you can just place them, link them, hook them up to a constantly running pump (to pressurize the magma), and forget about them until they catch the world on fire.

I built something like this a while back:

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=61614.0;topicseen

It was pretty effective, but then I got employed.  Having a job really puts the brakes on a megaproject.  However, I did get a limited-area reloadable network of magma reservoirs, with half an infrastructure set up for combining an adjacent network of water reservoirs to create a hexagonal grid of cave-in guns reinforced by magma waterfalls.  It's eminently doable, you can check the pictures in the updates.  It just takes a lot of time to construct, since you have to build everything in very discrete stages to prevent uncontrollable magma floods and/or bridgework cave-in.
