Also, I know they're only ants, but they just wiped out a colony that's probably the equivalent of ant-Dallas or something.

This should happen if your fortress get flooded and you had a sizable stock of gypsum powder.  :P

New challenge: Build a fort. Flood your fort with water, then with magma. Reclaim it, and dig away all surrounding soil, leaving an obsidian cast of your previous fortress.

Wouldn't the contact point of the water and magma turn into obsidian, thus keeping the rest of the magma from flowing in? Perhaps someone should mod in a liquid that hardens into a sand-like block after a set period of time.

The ant colony was ABANDONED.

Ant colonies relocate all the time when an area has been hunted long enough.
