Geohashing - interesting and dwarfy activity
« on: July 23, 2012, 08:06:33 am »

Every day new, random points are generated (one for each 1°×1° latitude/longitude zone).

And you may try to reach this completely random point in gloriously useless trip - in my case it mobilised me to make two bicycle trips.

Coordinate finder (pan the map around, and click on the location you wish to geohash in) - http://carabiner.peeron.com/xkcd/map/map.html

I forsee many possible problems with this system.

With my luck I'd end up in a toxic waste site.

Does it give everyone the same coordinates?

It's divided up into regions. Use the linked coordinate finder and click near where you live - it will highlight the region red and give you the day's location. Sometimes the marker for another region will be closer to you than the marker for the region you're in, so it's useful to check the nearby regions as well.

I've gone geohashing once before. Even if you don't find anything cool (someone had already the thing that was supposed to be stuck in the tree we went to), it's a great excuse to go hang out with some friends.

I believe you're thinking of geocaching. Geohashing is just about the journey - there's nothing at the end; the location is randomly decided each day and cannot be accurately predicted beforehand. It is a great activity for hanging out with friends, though.

This is the algorithm used, for those not interested enough to visit the wiki:
