Is it not possible for you too add an element of multiplayer over the net, Hosting a map on one of there systems that they can each build a fort on to either fight or work side by side, This would be an interesting feature and would make the use of trade depots alot more fun, Due to the trading between each fortress maybe make it so that map sizes can be rather large so you could own whole nations, that will eventually have armies to conquer your freinds fort or maybe a goblin fort.
Just a suggestion that i think would be awesome.

The lag would be horrible, but another major issue thats been explored in one of the more productive threads about this suggestion, was frame/turn synchronization; especially concerning the frequent pausing that happens during normal gameplay.

Though, there is telenet thrid party app. It doesn't allow for multiplayer action, but does allow for remote playing, and live fortress visiting.

There's also DFFD for succession forts.  No, they're not the same as multiplayer, but they can be fun.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

why would there be lag? he was talking about hosting separate forts, you could play online season by season and the game just sent the updated info between them as several players manned an entire civ. they wouldn't really even be able to see each-other and the most contact they could have would be sending migrants, diplomats/representatives and trade caravans. it would be slow but i think pretty popular.
