Managing/Selling/Buying Items
« on: March 15, 2011, 01:32:21 am »

This area of the game kind of needs to be overhauled:

1) Is there any way to know if the item you're trying to sell is one that's equipped on you? Many times I find myself selling an equipped item that I have duplicates of, causing me to go through an irritating dance of re-equipping gear each time I visit a merchant.

2) Is it really necessary for us to have to go and pick up the item/gold after we make a transaction?

3) Anyone else feel like there should be an "optimize armor" button? I like to micro-manage, but not like this. Reequipping is honestly just busy work.

Normally the things at the top/far bottom of the trade list are things your holding or wearing...

Df's trading system is weird and unlike many of the commonly accepted kinds where there is a list of items, it doesnt just put the item in your inventory, it does put the gold you give up in the chest...

Keep the crap you want to sell in a container and sell the stuff directly under it...

There is no fun in optimizing armor automaticly, and not many games do it anyways, most do have standardised armor values for stuff, but that would never work with df...

Well, maybe it could at least be a bit more intuitive. Flipping back and forth between pages of my inventory would be less time-consuming if there were a sort function. I get kind of googly-eyed hopping back and forth comparing gear quality and body part location.

I didn't think to use a separate container for sale items though. Thanks for the tip!

Additional containers are the best solution for now. I use one backpack for everything I carry and 1-2 bags for money, throwable items, *«☼valuable little things☼»* (invest money excess in these) etc.
Ah, the modest comforts of DF.

Sometimes you can find your backpack in the trade menu. Everything inside the backpack has an extra space before it compared to  the gear you are wearing or holding. Usually whats inside your backpack is the junk you want to sell off, so its easy when you can see it, but other times your backpack doesn't even show up. I don't know why. When that happens what I do is first figure out what I want to keep. Then throw it all in the ground outside and walk in to the shop butt naked with only a backpack full of junk.

p.s. don't sell off your backpack

Wait, there are shops? I thought they didn't work, and so they didn't show up. I haven't seen one for a while, now.
