Lakes drying up
« on: November 19, 2007, 12:07:00 am »

I'm playing on a temperate map with a river. During the summer all of the small murky water lakes start to dry up, and they don't refill in any of the other seasons. It strikes me as odd because if it's hot enough for the lakes to evaporate, then they shouldn't form in the first place. I don't think that Toady has implemented droughts. It's not a huge problem on this map, I have a water source. But still.

i play a warm biome where the small lakes dried up between summer and winter
they didnt refil in spring or anything!

i later lost to goblins, went adventure, (really screws the map items) and reclaimed the fortress and the lakes have yet to dry up yet
i think adventurer adds some extra code to the water tables so when you reclaim the fortress they dont drain

This is one of the things in DF that made me scratch my head - the arrival of the Dwarves made the lakes dry up? That's certainly how it seems...

It happens because simple rainfall doesn't generate flowing water, although it theoretically should. I had an expedition nearly die of thirst, but two very small lakes (2 and 3 tiles) never dried up in the first place. I don't know why that happened though.

My lakes haven't dried up in temperate hilly area.  You're probably in a warmer area than I am, and things aren't filling up the way they should.

Most lakes should have a water source, I think rain or melting snow could be modelled better in the future.
