Civs and Eggs

With the addition of eggs, is it now possible to create civilized creatures that lay eggs? And would eggs they laid ever hatch into babies?

This has been discussed in-depth in the modding forums.  Short answer: Yes, but civilized eggs will still be eaten, and unmarried women will lay unfertilized eggs that still use up egg box space.  On the other hand, you can encourage certain individuals to breed by placing the next box near them, such as in their bedroom, so you can have your nobles start up a family lineage or something.  Lots of interesting options when you've got egg-layers, but until you're able to assign nests to individuals, it's still got issues.

Has anyone determined whether or not civ ethics will affect this?

They don't appear to.  An egg is simply a food that cannot be eaten raw (unless modded to allow for snakes or something that eat raw eggs), but they'll gladly be used in prepared meals.  There's no moral tokens concerning food types.

There are ethics about eating sapients, killing your own race, or using your own race's parts to make stuff. Those could certainly be relevant, even if only accidentally.

Actually, I thinking the eating tag only changes the act of butchering, and whether or not they'll butcher a corpse.  Untested.

Simple way to test this, find a night creature's lair, and embark, they usually have a bunch of dwarf/elf/human meat to chow down on. Forbid all other food and see if your dwarves eat it.

I like this plan. Hmmmmm Dwarf Meat. Sweetly marinated in alcohol.

So, I heard you like beer and dwarves?

We put beer in your dwarf, killed him so your other dwarf could enjoy beer-dwarf with his beer.

Suggestion: Either kill the critter first in adventurer mode, or embark with a decent military. Confined spaces+outnumbered=FUN...And I usually go demigod.
