Bedridden dwarf... sends his water to stockpile
« on: April 20, 2007, 01:29:00 pm »

A dual legendary dwarf just got injured by a horse... despite being superdwarvenly tough and armed with an axe. He ran all the way to a bed, with a bright yellow wound. Now, hes hungry and thirsty. But every time another dwarf goes and fetches him water, the dwarf gets to him and instantly takes it to a food stockpile, or when I remove all my food stockpiles, just dumps it on the ground. Any ideas? Or do I just hope he heals before he dies of thirst?

Okay, I deconstructed the bed he was on - he was in his own room on his own bed previously - which forced him to move to another bed, one which wasn't assigned to anyone. I notice Give Food is activated as he reached the bed, and the current attempt to get water to him succeeds. I have a save from just before the bed is destroyed if you are interested Toady. Injured party is Tosid Ralvunom, Mason.

If you place a food stockpile you will see the dwarves stockpile water once the give water fails. Otherwise they will dump the water on the miner and try again.

Also, note the place where the water is collected from, it is not the nearest place to collect water from to the resting dwarf, the dwarf giving water before picking up the the bucket (that would be the well) or upon picking up the bucket (it is a very specific point on the river that all the dwarves have gone to.)

I'll note this down.  I can't check saves without reinstalling the old version of DF on my system, so I'll just try to figure it out without one at some point.

Something that came up in another thread:  is it possible the water was frozen, or are they getting the water from inside?

Thats a good one, its the first time I'd played with temperature on for a while and the water was coming from outside. Then again, I don't think it was a freezing map. I have groundhogs and horses for wild animals.

I had the same problem, too. Let's see . . . the things I noticed were:

The river was completely frozen at the time. The injured dwarf was resting in his own bed. The water carrying drawf(s) always went to the same spot in the frozen river to get water. Water wasn't shown in the inventory while the dwarf carried it - it just showed the normal clothes and wooden bucket. The dwarf did bring the water to the injured dwarf, then flashed a red question mark, then brought the water to the food storage area, then dropped the water. The dropped water was light blue, and evaporated after a while. The water carrying dwarf also ignored the well that I had not too far from the injured dwarf's room to go to get water from the frozen river. The well designated a meeting area.

The injured dwarf ended up dying from thirst. It should have been dying from dehydration.

Despite being able to walk (he had head and shoulder injuries), the injured dwarf didn't get his own water or food when he started starving and got dehydrated.

One other thing that might be related:

I remember noticing that my fisherdwarf cancelled her fishing job once the river froze, but then continued to fish at the frozen river.

Wow, I'm an idiot. My friend gave me Dwarf Fortress, but a version that was over a year old.

I've downloaded the most current version now.

I had a recruit die after a sparring accident because the dwarves stopped feeding him. Annoying.

A year old isn't actually that old :P It was "current" up through the 25th of October or so.  But yes, LOTS of changes since then.  Welcome to v33!

I've noticed that if they can't give them water, they won't feed them either.  They seem to need to do it in order.  Lately I've been seeing people with injured necks being ignored and left to die, maybe they can't swallow?
