What to do with frequent crashes?
« on: March 15, 2011, 03:04:13 pm »

Yep, this will be a newb question, as I'm a newb.

I've got my third fortress flourishing, survived some Goblin ambushes, getting the hang of how to go around the aquifer in the map but:
Every so often, the game crashes. I can't get it narrowed down as to if there's some sure way of bringing this about.
It's mostly in pause mode, after wanting to look at something by pressing 'k'.
The fortress is currently 106-116 dwarves strong
(I don't know exactly, as I've played the same part about five times and seen three different migrant waves before the game crashed on me - again)
This is really ruining the game for me. So what to do I ask of you:

  • I have installed the new version 0.31.21, alas no change
  • abandon fortress, new game new luck?
  • regen the whole world?
  • Complete newinstall, generate new world?
  • forget about the game and sit in a corner, weeping bitterly?

Any informed comment will help!
Thanks in advance!

About when (in game-time) does it crash? During the migration wave, between migration and the season's caravan (if any), etc.?

The game seems to crash when loo'k'ing around or using the mousewheel to zoom in/out.

I've found this thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.msg2059957#msg2059957
in which Svampapa complains about very similar crash behavior, which he remedied by turning off truetype support.

I have done the same and will try that out, although being able to zoom out/in was a really useful feature.
Well better one less feature than live without DF!

Zooming in and out should still be supported. There should not be a problem with that.

I'd just like to say that I have the exact same problem.

It crashes every now and then when I loo[k] at something. It seems to happen in crowded areas, but this is just speculation.

Turning TT off did it for me, as you probably have discovered by now. It will take away the pretty letters, but you should still be able to zoom to your hearts delight.

I did some reading on the bugtracker and saw some stuff about certain fonts not being able to stretch properly or display the weird letters the Urists keep having in their names. Or something. I don't really know.

Edit: Oh, hi Rushmik! Update the Reveredwall thread! ;)

Hmmm, I on my part got these frequent crashes when trying to dispose of the last three Goblin ambushes.

Come to think of it, the game mostly crashed, when I went to loo"k" at what body parts were lying about the opened cages after the axeman squad was done with them.

Ha-Hum. I might try to move my savegame to a clean install and see if that gets me back to playing with TT fonts.

I get crashes when I look at units involved in a battle with certian forgotten beasts, and when I try to look at the big piles of crap that invaders drop when they have long worldgen histories.

Not every time I do these things, but every crash I've had was when I did one of those.
My theory is that there is a forgotten beast material that (sometimes?) crashes the game when you try to look at it.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.
or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.
