31.20 Mineral Scarcity
« on: March 06, 2011, 01:50:54 pm »

So has anyone had the time to play with the new Mineral Scarcity feature in world gen 31.20?  I'm curious how it works.  Is it a straight up multiplier, that makes minerals just more abundant?  Does high or low give me more minerals (as low scarcity might mean high amounts - lack of scarcity)?  And does it affect the chances of getting more than one kind of mineral? Not much use if making minerals less scarce means I get a mountain loaded with 2 million tons of gold instead of just the one million... and nothing else.

I am so happy.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I'm hoping to see the return of the colored minerals with this tweak. I'm embarking to a world with it set to 1000, down (i.e. more minerals) from the base 2500. Let's see how it pans out.

Set mineral scarcity to maximum (100000), and ended up with no dwarf cultures that I could buy iron ore from. After embarking in a 6x6 area, I took a look with dhprospector.

Yes, that's 884 tetrahedrite in an entire 6x6 region, and it doesn't seem particularly unique. Obviously higher settings make minerals more scarce. Strangely, quantities of slade and adamantine seem about the same as usual, so I guess they're generated using a different algorithm.

...Doesn't it say right on it...

Mineral Scarcity (lower = more metals)

I'm thinking 2500 is .19 levels, 1000 sounds to me like it would be good.

I can confirm that 1000 is pretty comfortable. Digging down, I've encountered tons of Cobaltite and Microcline in the Caverns, a healthy amount of Galena down there, and great Magnetite and Coal distribution on the surface.

Right but which setting equals 1000? Scarce? Frequent? Will be at least 8h before I can try it :P

I'm sure many people view both forums.  Not so much "coincidence" as "highly likely".
