Another thought in this general direction would be templates for rooms and/or work orders and such.
Basically, a room template (I did a quick search, and found
this and
this, but hopefully I can add something to the idea. If nothing else, I can at least bring it up for consideration again) would be a 'stamp' that you've defined (either in a seperate screen or by 'copying' an existing room) which you can put down and have your dwarves build. Say, for instance, that you've got a living quarters room template - where you've dug out a series of rooms, smoothed and engraved the walls, and placed all the appropriate furniture - and you use that template to designare an area to become another one just like it. Your manager would then go on to process it, and then your dwarves would proceed to dig out the area, smooth and engrave the walls, and build and place the furniture (and walls/floors, or other constructions, if neccessary). All with only one simple command from you.
Work order templates might be things like uniforms etc, with many different items. You just put one in the work orders list, and each item in the work order is scheduled. Say, for instance, that such a uniform template has a chain mail, gauntlets, high boots, chain leggings, cloak, robe and a helmet, then that work order would contain all those items (and maybe even group them together and put them in some sort of container to make sure they're all in the same place and can be easily assigned to a single dwarf).
