I was trying to melt down some of my useless armors and things. However I kept getting the message that it was cancelled because "needs item".  I have charcoal and loads upon loads of metal items.

Since all my metal items are of foreign sources, it would seem that foriegn metal items can't be melted down.  Such a restriction seems like a bug.

Temporary workaround: move said items (through creative stockpile manipulation) into the path of a magma flow, and that will melt them down.

But it really does need fixing.

Actually I think its that decorated items can't be melted. I have melted many of my other items, but any of the decorated one dont seem to like being melted

I'm pretty sure that nothing can be melted at all until you get the Bookkeeper/an economy.  I wish the error message were more informative.

Were the foreign items specifically designated for melt down?  This occurs in the bookkeeper's screen.  Of course, this isn't clear from the scant documentation.

I didn't have the book keeper yet.  After I posted I found out that was needed.  I guess just a clearer failure message would be helpful.
