Apparently the whole game's creepyness was toned down before release. Alot of stuff got changed or removed, the most notable one being that

island were lucas and his friends eat some mushrooms and have a really, really bad trip. The messages on the mail boxes you'd find were apparently much worse. The creator himself said in an interview that he scrapped the original idea for that place because when implemented, he saw it was reaaaaallly weird and creepy, even for himself.
