Simply build a cage, then assign the animal to the cage and sell the cage.  This requires having an animal, constructing a cage, building the cage on a free tile, assigning the animal to the cage, deconstructing the cage, then selling the cage at the trade depot.  please note you lose the cage

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

Uh, unless it's changed in recent versions, dwarves bringing a cage to the trade depot would first let out any animal in that cage.
This generally led to a lot of dead dwarves. :)

I may be wrong though, I've never personally wanted to sell animals.

Well, I hope it was a cavy or something he was trying to sell and, you know, not a pack of wild rhinos, because otherwise you just gave a really bad advice. Dwarves will free animals from cages when they bring those cages to the depot. At least the wild ones. Presumably he was talking about tamed ones (which I suppose could work differently... I have only fucked up royally with this myself), but it should always be said, either way, that you should never try to sell that entire goblin siege you took prisoner into slavery.

I just did notice that there is a "pets" option in the trading menu, besides cages. Does that work better?

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.
