General size of the overworld?
« on: March 04, 2011, 11:17:21 pm »

I have a 40d world that I've been writing fluff for a long time, and right now I'm working on drawing a map of the world. My issue now is I have no sense of scale for the thing, and I can't seem to find any wiki entries or thread referring to this! I'm curious in the general dump file (the normal region map) how much one square equates to, roughly? I'd love to use my world to eventually make an RPG/campaign world, but I'd love to know the size of the different areas that the map generator has created. I'm using the large-sized map (257x257), in 40d.

1 ingame tile is 1.5*1.5*4.5m
1 local tile has 48*48 ingame tiles
1 regional or world tile has 16*16 local tiles
Your world has 257*257 regional tiles.

So the size is 1.5*48*16*257 = 296064m in both direction. This is equal to 296km or 184 miles. There are some 3D visuallizer programs out there if you need assistance.

Okay! Thank you very much, that's great to know. That's way smaller than I thought!

I do have Terragen 2 but I'm not very good at it. Knowing the proper sizes of the map will make projecting the heightmap a lot easier.

Basic problems with that math - 1.5 x 1.5 x 4.5 isn't accurate. 1 tile is big enough to hold 999 dragons if need be, but also only really holds one dwarf reasonably well.

Though the rest is spot on. 257 (region tiles) x 16 (local tiles) x 48 (dwarf-units)
= 197376 Urist length and width

If 1 Urist = 1 meter, than your area is 38957 square kilometers
But the Urist unit can be any figure you think is reasonable.

I do think I'll have to resize, it just seems implausibly small for the scale of the oceans/seas. I was originally going on it being the general size of North America, but that seemed a bit large... now I see why. I guess I can do a quarter of the size of North America, though-- should still be pretty huge, but small enough that the heightmaps behave for the mountains etc. Regardless, I think I'm going to try a 3D projection for a 87,616 km square region (using rephikul's numbers), just to see how spastic the no-erosion mountains come out. May be awesome, may be completely goofy.

If I'm not mistaken these numbers were hypothesized based on the speed at which an adventurer travel. It might not be totally correct, but it'd say close enough.
