Newb question on downloading mods

I downloaded a major mod (the Genesis one) from the DFFD, but it is .rar format and I can't find any information explaining what to do with it. How do I open it or otherwise convert it into a useable form?

rar is a compressed file format, like zip.

To decompress it, I suggest 7zip
