Show how much wind embark has
« on: April 02, 2011, 02:25:12 pm »

Today I had to abandon a halfway done megaproject because I expected there to be wind on a map where there wasn't any. So, I think it would be totally awesome if when embarking people could see whether the map has any wind and how much power does it give windmills to prevent such mess-ups for other people in the future.

This might be useful to show on the embark screen, but once you've embarked, finding out the local wind level is just a matter of putting up a windmill - it doesn't need to be connected to anything to show you how much power it generates.

You DO know how easy it is to set up a dwarven water reactor? Ones that produce ludicrous amounts of power?

The point is that he'd like to know how much wind there is BEFORE embark.

Yep.

But even as is one doesn't have to wait until one is halfway done a megaproject to check it out.

It's such a small change, but it would be intriguing to have. While I seldom use windmills, once perpetual motion machines are fixed this statistic will be a lifesaver. So I support.

I think that it should be changed so that the power varies in game. You would then get on the embark screen a thing saying how windy it usually is (windy, very windy, calm etc.), this would be based on how close you are to mountains, the coast and trees among other things. Maybe we could have the amount of power generated by windmills vary around the map as well.

That's cheating.

Cry me a river. Dwarf Fortress is in alpha, that means it's buggy. These bugs and "exploits" will be taken out ...sometime. Until then, I see no problem in using it.

Do you never mod the raws, either, because it's "cheating"? If so, you're not playing it right.

Alright, another totally awesome idea: remove the windmills altogether! Everyone uses DWRs anyway...

Why would Toady remove something that currently half works when he has no immediate plans to fix it?

Why has this degenerated into an argument as to whether using an exploit is cheating or not?
Exploits are cheating, RAW hacking is cheating, savescumming is cheating.

How about "Dwarf fortress is a sandbox game, thus any way of playing it that one enjoys is fine; we're not in competition with each other, so 'cheating' is an irrelevant concept in this context."?

Really. It's not hurting anything but goblins and elves if I choose to use a danger room or a water reactor or speed:0 dwarves in my fort, or if I decide to use none of those and no traps or crossbows, either, so why should you care? Grousing about anything like that sounds suspiciously like "stop having fun, guys!" to me.

He didn't say cheating makes one a horrible person, he just said it was cheating. I read it as "That is not the sort of thing all players are comfortable with." Maybe your impression of his intent is more correct than mine. Either way, doing what might be considered cheating is no more OK than trying to avoid it.
