Sand + Lead = Rough Rock Crystal
« on: March 02, 2011, 06:29:07 pm »

I don't know if there's any weirdness lurking in this reaction, but it does seem to work much better than my last attempt.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Please do let me know if you find any problems/improvements.

Thanks

Nothing beside it only using red sand. Is that for some chemical reason?

If not, you could use a reaction class tag to have it use any sort of sand.

I make Grimlocke's History & Realism Mods. Its got poleaxes, sturdy joints and bloomeries. Now compatible with DF Revised!

Yeah, I don't really see what specifically-red sand or lead have to do with making rough rock crystal, which is just quartz.

Or are you thinking of "crystal glass" in the lead-crystal sense? That's a whole other thing that DF doesn't particularly have at the moment, but I guess crystal glass is enough of an equivalent at the moment in terms of value.

Anyway, you just said yourself it "seems to work much better"; if there's a problem with it, wouldn't you have found it by now? My only suggestion would be to make sure that it only works for red sand, as stated by Grimlocke.

I have no idea about the modding part, but if you intend to use the rock crystals for crystal glass, there may be a problem. As far as I know, crystal glass is not working atm. I may be wrong, so you might want to test it.

I was hoping that creating crystal glass items would be implicitly fixed in v19 so the output of this reaction isn't necessarily very useful.  It is meant more as an example for modders more skilled than I.  I can still hope for it in v20.  Still though, if it really concerned me I could update(and fix) my glass forge mod.

I wanted to create a working example so I picked red sand; if someone else wants to take the time to figure out how to make a reaction class work, be my guest but it wouldn't take much effort at all to copy/paste and make one for each type of sand if necessary.  As I said, its an example more than anything.

The following, swiped straight from wikipedia is what I have based this reaction on:
Quote
Lead glass is a variety of glass in which lead replaces the calcium content of a typical potash glass.[1] Lead glass contains typically 18–40 weight% lead(II) oxide (PbO), while modern lead crystal, historically also known as flint glass due to the original silica source, contains a minimum of 24% PbO.[2] Lead glass is desirable owing to its decorative properties.

Technically, the term crystal is not applied to glass, as glass, by definition, lacks a crystalline structure. The use of the term lead crystal remains popular for historical and commercial reasons, and originally stems from the Venetian use of the word cristallo to describe the rock crystal imitated by Murano glassmakers. This naming convention has been maintained to the present day to describe decorative hollow-ware.[3]

A better question would be why does Toady have rock crystal making crystal glass when rock crystal has nothing to do with any form of glass.  I have interpreted his 'rock crystal' as being some sort of leaded silicate.

I assume that "rock crystal" in-game is the same as "rock crystal" out-of-game: A relatively pure, clear variety of quartz.

I always figured that DF "rock crystal" was just glass of exceptional clarity by virtue of being made with pure quartz crystals, since no other explanation made sense to me.
