Getting Started Issues
« on: March 05, 2011, 12:04:29 pm »

Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I played an earlier version of Dwarf Fortress, 28 something. I check back fairly often because I find Toady's dev updates and bug fixes really interesting. I love the concept of self generating fantasy worlds of infinite detail. The forum is also frequently awesome - like discussions of the engineering hurdles presented by mermaid farming (for mermaid bone crafts of course).

I'm writing because every time I think about reinstalling it seems like way too much work. While I appreciate the constant development, I don't really want to do bug testing and (while I know earlier versions of the game are available) sorting out which one's are bug free and feature-filled also seems like a pain. This has been going on for a year or two now. So for me, the obstacles to taking up this game are apparently greater than the fun I expect to get out of playing it. I wonder if this is a common issue and if more could be done to make getting started easier.

I'll also say that for me, a graphics pack is essential and I really wish one came with the game.

If this duplicates another thread please link me.

peace

Even numbered releases tend to be less buggy, toady tends to shoot creativity out of the ears in odd numbered releases that are strewn with bugs, then fix them in even numbered releases. Overall, if you haven't played since 28d, there have been many bug fixes and changes that toady has done over the years. You could download .18 or wait until .20 to come out.

I actually like the vanilla graphic scheme. Downloading isn't to much of a hassle, and there is a very large variety. Plus if you were to ask the boards "Hey what graphics set should replace the vanilla graphics" you would get more then a dozen different answers as people state their favorite and campaign for it.

If you want graphics to come with the game you can just go with one of the complete installs of a graphics pack.

Thanks for the replies. It is really nice to know that big changes come with the odd numbered releases. I like the lazy newb pack linked above. I will try it. It would be really cool if something like it got official sanction and was put up front on the webpage (I don't know if it needs to come with all those utilities though).
