Urist McDwarf withdraws from society!
« on: February 26, 2011, 03:43:15 pm »

For the first time in my time playing dwarf fortress someone has withdrawn from society. I don't know what to expect and am not deeply concerned seeing as it is just a Potash Maker. What should I expect from Urist McPotash?

The game will pick a random skill and have him make an artifact using that skill at which point he will become a Legendary+1 in that skill. If you have a variety of materials available you should be fine. However if you are missing one of the material types they want then eventually they will lose the mood and become depressed until they eventually die.

Also congratulations on your first mood!

If you don't have gems (both kinds), bones, "body parts", shells or bars of every metal, you can expect a tantrum spiral (the swarf will go berserk, attack another dwarf, make his friends sad, so they berserk and so on ad infinitum until "your settlement has crumbled to it's end")

I've had moods and artifacts, but I've just never had the "Urist withdraws from society" sign and didn't know what to expect when one would appear. Yep, my dwarf just claimed a Carpenter's Workshop, hope he has everything!

Oh, "withdraws from society" is just a different kind of mood -- a secretive one, I think?  I think it's only different from fey moods in description.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.
